“You can’t hire someone else to do your push-ups for you.”

As famous motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said,

“You can’t hire someone else to do your push-ups for you.”

Take a moment and think about that for a second.

It seems these days that everyone has a goal to be fit and “in shape”; everyone has a goal to live the entrepreneur lifestyle with the freedom to travel and the money to support it; everyone has some big dream or desire with life that they have not yet achieved but nearly all of these people have one thing in common –

They don’t want to do their “push-ups”.

How do I know this? It’s simple. If they were doing their “push-ups”, they wouldn’t be passively dreaming these goals – they would be living these goals.

Look, anyone on this beautiful, big planet can set goals they wish to achieve. I have them and I hope you do as well. But what is going to separate us from the dreamers and the doers are those “push-ups”, and I’m talking about the figurative push-ups here – for the most part.

Think about the “Push-Ups” that need to happen to achieve your goals.

Obviously with fitness goals, yes there probably is a literal push-up in your workout routine. The driving point is that you cannot in any possible way, shape, or form, hire someone to do your workout for you and expect to gain the results. That is impossible (Sorry to break it to you). You must show up every day and do the work; the count of each rep; the dedication to that time and to the process of achieving your goal. This is not optional, this is mandatory.

How about business goals? Do you see yourself as CEO of your company one day, sitting in that big corner office with floor-to-ceiling windows, as you lean back in your chair and kick your heels up to admire the view? Or do you envision a life of travel and adventure, maybe running a business remotely that allows you to work from the warm, stunning beaches of Bali, Indonesia. Or maybe you want that Etsy account of yours to finally grip the dirt and take off so that you can be paid to do what you love every. single. day.

Whatever your financial and business goals may be, you are still required to do your “push-ups”. Work the extra hours at the office; write that blog post or take a photography class and then practice; promote your Etsy store on as many platforms as you possible can just to get your name and product out there. You cannot do this just once my friends. You must do it again, and again, and again, day in and day out, and the results will manifest. It will be slow and minimal at first, as it always is. But if you keep showing up relentlessly, the results of your work will begin to shine – I promise.

Let’s say neither of those fields apply and you may just have a few personal goals. Maybe they are smaller or more simple ones, or maybe they are lofty and impressive, even to you. Whatever the size may be or the time it will take to achieve them, you still must do the “Push-Ups” in order to achieve them, one rep and one day at a time.

“You can’t hire someone else to do your push-ups for you.”

This quote is universal and can be applied in so many areas in life which is why I think I love it so much.

So what are you thoughts? The discussion is always open and I would love to hear what YOU think.

  1. You have to put in the work, and you get back what you put in. I was never a big believer in the whole you make your own reality concept until I got older and found that regardless of my belief it was a true statement. Love reading your blog posts and love seeing people shatter their own ceilings. Keep on keeping on and let that badassery shine! Lol

    1. Thank you Cody! I think that concept is acquired over time. It’s definitely not something that comes naturally but once you tap into it and make it your truth, then the skies the limit!
