I suppose this my obligatory New Years post. I’ll try to keep it short.
For me, I would say that I don’t set “resolutions” on January 1st of every year. I set goals, ambitions, lifestyle changes, new practices… and most of the time I have these goals in mind long before the new year rolls around. For my most recent ambitions, it coincidentally happened to be the beginning of a new year.
This year I have some big goals in mind that I can not wait to see fulfilled. I’m adopting new practices into my daily life which drives my motivation to succeed. I’ll touch on a few of them.
One idea that I really dove into around mid December was the practice of Minimalism. I’m certain most of the world has heard of The Minimalists, some of the worlds greatest driving minds behind this ideal. They encourage others to seek out and pursue this lifestyle, give advice, answer questions and motivate the world towards this change. I’ve plugged in the earbuds and become lost in The Minimalists podcasts, finding my own motivation and discovering what my own excuses are for holding on to things that no longer serve me.
I feel as though I have been adopting this practice subconsciously in the last few years. I seem to move residence nearly once every year, and the amount of ‘stuff’ I own has actually started to shrink. In retrospect to any other female that’s my age, I actually don’t have that much. What remains are mainly things I could use one day, like kitchen supplies, DVD’s, decorations, etc. But I haven’t touched them in 3 years!! That’s what kills me. This shit has been in storage, in the same boxes, and has become such a pain in the ass to move. Have I used it in the last 3 months? No. Does it serve me on a daily basis? No. Then why hold onto it?! I ask myself this every single time I move.
I’m figuring out what it is though: I have emotional attachment to a lot of it. Many items were gifts. If the persons who gave me these things found out that I just ended up getting rid of them, that would be tough for everyone involved. Specifically looking at my parents. Many kitchen gadgets were gifts and I know it would hurt their feelings. This practice is not fully accepted or easy to embrace, that’s for damn sure. It will take time. It’ll take emotional detachment. I plan to attack it piece by piece, to widdle down my items by the time I move next.
With talking about The Minimalist podcast, I intend to listen to more podcasts in general. There is so much good information out there awaiting to be heard. My goal is to apply this to my daily life and gain what I can from listening in on the masterminds of the world.
Another practice I intend to implement in my life is reading daily. Many, many successful persons do this on a daily basis, most before bed every night. I actually enjoy reading, so this should not be hard to do. For Christmas I was given an incredible book that I had JUST heard about in a podcast days before. Thank you Ed!
This mammoth book should last me for a couple of weeks. My goal is to read at least one book a month – start reading what the successful people read. Adopt this simple and easy practice to reap the incomprehensible benefits.
In this book, I have already read up on a few daily practices from some of my greatest idols. Tim Ferris has a morning practice of journal writing. It’s known as The Five Minute Journal. It is not about writing some lengthy entry first thing in the morning, but rather an outlet to clear your head-space of thoughts or feelings that could be troubling you that morning, or you feel the need to write down to make room for greater thoughts and feelings throughout the day. Tim had first mentioned this practice in his other book The Four Hour Workweek (also on my list to read this year). You can check out the article here.
Another area I intend to hit hard will be in my finances department. I’ve been listening to a few of the greats like Tony Robbins and Jim Rohn and what they advise for financial success. It is all about investing first, spending what is left. Of which I currently do the opposite, like most people. But the first task is to establish an emergency fund in case something happens. They talk about giving back or donating to charity, investing in the world around you. Also of course, investing your money to get money back, getting out of debt, things like that. This area has always been a struggle for me, so I’m driven to finally turn it around.
The last big one I have is my goal to go to Baja in December of 2017 with friends in my truck group Microlander Overland. This will involve committing to some serious upgrades for my Tacoma. I want to be fully capable of sustaining myself for two weeks while we go down the Baja and come back up. I plan to work hard and save up to pay for each new part in cash. I have a list of items with boxes to check off after each upgrade. One day my truck will be overland worthy and my list will not be so daunting.
Other ideals I have are to meditate daily, being grateful every single day, continuing with my healthy habits, increasing the adventures and caching in on the memories, creating additional income to support my lifestyle, aiming to move into my own place this year (looking at the tiny home movement! More to come on that), make a positive impact on those around me and just keep on keeping on with the badass lifestyle and what I love to do.
